For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with a skillful psalm. –Psalm 47:7
We are familiar with the book of Psalms, but what exactly is a psalm? A Psalm is a song or hymn often written as a poem or prayer that is set to music. According to Dictionary.com (2024) the origin of the word Psalm is Late Latin psalmus , Greek psalmós song sung to the harp, originally, a plucking, as of strings, akin to psállein to pluck, pull, play (the harp).
I wrote two posts about worshiping with singing and worshiping with instruments. Music and singing are central to God’s design for worship. The Apostle Paul teaches us in Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” We are to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in our hearts to God. The key is to sing with thankfulness from the heart. Last week, I wrote about how our souls contain our emotions, and I wrote a post on worshiping with thankfulness, so I won’t address these here.
Additionally, the Apostle Paul taught the following to the saints in Ephesus. Ephesians 5:19-21,“Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Paul wants the church to worship through hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs, which is central to Christian discipline. Paul also emphasized the need to be thankful. You can’t be thankful when you are focused on what you don’t like. We are instructed in Colossians 3:1-3 to set our minds on the things above where Christ is seated.
I personally love singing hymns, but we are also to sing psalms and spiritual songs. One of my favorite psalms to sing is “As the deer pants for the water” Psalm 42. What is your favorite Psalm, Hymn, or spiritual song? Some spiritual songs lack praise for God. Worship leaders must ensure they pick hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs that encourage the church and praise the King of the Universe and the earth.
Pick a worshipful hymn, psalm, or spiritual song and praise the Lord this week. Be blessed as you worship your eternal King and Father.

WEEK 40–October 1-October 7
Day 274-Oct. 1—Worship God, who enables you for ministry.
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry. –1Timothy 1:12 (KJV)
Day 275-Oct. 2—Worship God, who gives you mercy and grace.
Though formerly, I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent man. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. –1Timothy 1:13-14
Day 276-Oct. 3—Worship God for wanting all men to be saved.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. –1Timothy 2:3-4
Day 277-Oct. 4—Worship God for ransoming Himself for everyone and is the mediator.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. –1Timothy 2: 5-6 (KJV)
Day 278-Oct. 5—Worship God for giving you contentment along with godliness.
But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. –1Timothy6:6-8
Day 279-Oct. 6—Worship God for richly providing for you.
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. –1Timothy 6:17
Day 280-Oct. 7—Worship God for giving you a spirit of power, love, and sound mind.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. –2Timothy 1:7
