Have you prayed for something or someone for a long time and God isn’t answering?
Do you think your request is too hard for Him, or that He doesn’t care about you?
I sometimes struggle with why God does not answer my prayers. For example, my oldest son was a drug addict for ten years. I prayed for him all that time, and I am still praying for him. You see, God cannot make a person choose to do good or love because He gave us free will. God can and does arrange circumstances to encourage people to repent, as shown in the Old Testament. My son has not returned to God yet, but God set up a circumstance that caused my son to give up drugs. He is doing very well, but I am still praying for his repentance, and I have hope. Romans 11:23 states, “And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.”
Understanding God’s Power
This year I have been explaining how the spiritual world interacts with the physical world. In the first half of the year, I wrote about evil/demonic spirits, how they impact us, and how we can overcome them. Now I have been studying God’s power and how it affects our daily lives. Romans 1:20 states, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
In my last post, I wrote about why we need God’s power and might. Though we do not always see God’s physical power at work, it directly impacts how we respond to the trials and difficulties in the physical world when we trust Him to help us. In the previous post, I explained how we can stand firm and not fear through God’s power.
How God’s Power Changes Lives
Today’s post explores God’s power to change lives that may seem impossible. The best example is the conversion of Saul, who persecuted Christians, then met Jesus on the Damascus Road, became the Apostle Paul, a great missionary, and wrote most of the New Testament. No one is too hard for Jesus to touch and change their lives. I am a member of Gideons International and have seen many testimonies of people whose lives changed after reading a Gideon Bible. Hebrews 4:12 states, ” For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” God’s Word is powerful to change lives when it is received by faith.
The gospel message of Jesus Christ, the power in His shed blood on the cross, and the Holy Spirit given to us have the following power in our lives:
- Power to save a person from the punishment of sin and death (Rom. 1:16, 1Thes. 1:5, Rom. 5:9, Rom. 6:23).
- Power to redeem and bring a person into a right relationship with God (Neh. 1:10, Eph. 1:7, Col. 1:14).
- Power to sanctify a person and make them pure and holy (1Thes. 5:23, 1Cor. 6:11).
- Power to justify and not hold a believer accountable for their forgiven sin (Rom. 3:23-24, Rom. 5:18, Col. 2:13-14).
- Power to make us righteous through Jesus Christ. (2Cor. 5:21).
- Power to heal your soul and body through righteous prayer (James 5:16).
Conclusion
Jeremiah 32:17 states, ‘Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. Also, Luke 1:37 states, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” So why doesn’t God answer our prayers the way we want Him to if nothing is too hard for Him? There are many reasons why God does not answer prayers as we desire. Please read the posts I wrote about why God may not answer our prayers; see Posts About Prayer. Please remember that God has given mankind free will to believe and obey Him. He cannot make someone believe or obey. Keep praying for God to arrange circumstances to encourage belief or obedience. Does that make sense? God has the power to save, redeem, sanctify, justify us, make us righteous, and heal us when we believe.
“Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love (2John 1:3).”
